ScreenShot FKEY Version 1.0 July 20, 1989 The ScreenShot FKEY is an FKEY that will allow you to take full-screen snapshots of any screen of any size or color depth. On multi-screen systems, ScreenShot should capture all screens in its snapshot, but I haven't actually tested this... The screen images are saved at the root level of your boot disk, and are named "Screen n", where "n" is some integer. There is no limit to the number of screen shots you can take. The screens are saved as PICT files; the creator is set so that MacDraw II will open the screen shot file if you double-click it; the FKEY is easily patched such that your own drawing program can be launched instead; just search for "MDPL" and replace it with the four-byte signature code of the drawing program of your choice. The FKEY will not take snapshots of pulled-down menus; perhaps in a future version, depending on the response that this one generates. If you're running under MultiFinder, there may not be enough available memory to take the snapshot; the FKEY requires about 40K of RAM for the image on a 640 by 480 screen. The solution is to not use MultiFinder when taking snapshots, or to increase the application's partition size by the appropriate amount (to get an estimate of the memory required, multiply the screen's width by the screen's height, and divide by 8). If there is insufficient memory to take a snapshot, the FKEY will beep. To install the ScreenShot FKEY, just double-click on the "ScreenShot Installer" icon. A dialog box will appear, with a radio button for each FKEY slot in your system. If a slot is occupied by an FKEY, the corresponding radio button will be dimmed. In that case, use ResEdit to remove the FKEY from your system (note the usual precautions with respect to using ResEdit). After selecting the FKEY slot, click "Install", and the FKEY will be installed and the Installer will exit. At this point, pressing the command-shift-number combination you chose will cause a snapshot to be taken. Clicking the "Try It" button in the Installer's dialog will take a screen snapshot. The ScreenShot FKEY is shareware; the requested contribution is $10. If response (accompanied by the fee) is sufficient, I will invest time in improving the FKEY, in particular adding the ability to take snapshots while buttons or menus are held down.
